The Caring 4 Croydon consortium, including main contractor Osborne, has handed over two groundbreaking care facilities for frail, elderly people in Croydon.
Heavers Resource Centre and Fellows Court comprise the first phase of Croydon Council’s £39 million ‘Homes for the Future’ programme to transform care for older people in the Borough by replacing outdated buildings with modern, state-of-the-art facilities.
Heavers Resource Centre is a landmark one-stop shop for dementia sufferers and their carers. Within the scheme is a residential unit for elderly, mentally frail people, two day centres, and offices for the Community Mental Health Team, Community Memory Service and the Alzheimer’s Society. It is the first scheme in the country to offer such integrated services for older people under one roof.
Fellows Court is an extra care sheltered housing scheme offering accommodation and support for elderly people in 40 self-contained flats having shared communal facilities with a 36-place day centre to support frail elderly people living at home.
Clive Turrell , project leader at Osborne, said: “We are delighted that the first two homes are now up and running and we have now started work on the second half of the programme, which will comprise two more care facilities. Ultimately, it’s all about providing vastly improved facilities for the older people, so we were delighted with the speed and smooth running of the PFI process from conception to its current stage.”
The second part of the Homes for the Future programme has started on site with the construction of the two remaining care facilities at Langley Oaks and Addington Heights. These are due for completion in the summer of 2010 and will bring the total number of residential and nursing places to 150 plus 40 extra care flats and 128 day care places.
