I work for Osborne Civil Engineering who is involved with highways, rail and urban infrastructure works. I've been with them two and a half years since I finished a four year degree course at university.
My role day to day is generally as a technical managerial member of staff overseeing the works and advising how best they should be completed. Osborne run an Institute of Civil Engineers approved graduate training scheme. Over the course of four years graduates spend times within different sections of the civil engineering division learning about estimating, planning, setting out, design and actual site management, so you'll spend some time in the office but most of the times out on site.
As you get further and further through the process you'll be involved more and more with management and even in my short time with Osborne I've already managed a few smaller jobs. During the next few years I'd like to learn a lot more about site management and hopefully go on to site manage some larger projects.
Probably the best thing about working for Osborne is the variation in the experience you get. One day you could be on a railway job, the next day you could be on a motorway job, the next day you could be fitting a turbine into a grade two-listed building - which is something I got involved with.
