Transport - Airports

"Airport operators want construction work to be carried out as quickly and safely as possible with minimum disruption to the travelling public. " Bobby Vijay, Key Account Manager, Construction Division

BAA frameworkOsborne recently signed a five-year framework agreement with BAA to carry out commodity projects at its airports up to the value of £30 million. The framework covers civil engineering, construction, property services and rail-related work. Osborne is unusual among medium-sized construction companies in that we have operating divisions specialising in all of these areas, and can therefore take on any work that is released as part of the framework.

Our experience in other sectors - particularly rail - makes us aware of the safety culture required at airports. Osborne’s approach to safety was an important factor in winning the framework, as was our competence in other sectors. We have an excellent track record in hospitals, schools, railways and industrial installations. This experience demonstrates our ability to ensure that construction and maintenance work does not interfere with the day-to-day running of a facility.

Osborne’s private ownership and financial strength gave BAA confidence that they were entering into an agreement with a company that is comfortable developing long term relationships with its clients. This is our preferred method of working, and we have demonstrated our willingness to be open with our clients across many different sectors._

We are confident that we can deliver the value for money BAA requires, and our quality and environmental management systems will ensure that every activity can be tracked by the client.

BAA is determined to minimise its carbon footprint and reduce construction waste to zero. Osborne has had a policy of waste reduction for many years, and all of our sites segregate waste for recycling. We have also demonstrated a commitment to innovative construction techniques that improve energy efficiency, and regularly use off-site construction and assembly techniques.

With an investment of £6.5 billion over the next five years at our UK airports, getting the procurement process right is paramount for BAA as it enters its third generation of Framework Contracts. This involves BAA stepping back slightly when it comes to risks that are better managed by the supply chain. Osborne was appointed to the Commodity Build Contractors Framework because they demonstrated they could add value if empowered to take accountability. They demonstrated themselves to be a contractor who takes long term relationships seriously, and as part of that relationship they would understand and encourage collaboration and innovation.” Christopher Howe, Construction Team, BAA Procurement/BAA Capital Projects
